Seiko is known for being a byword for quality and value for money, and the Seiko 5 Sports range is no exception. With about a dozen different models available, there is one to suit your every want and need.
About Seiko 5 Sports Watches
After the impressive success of the Seiko SKX range came to an end, the Seiko 5 range had a pretty pair of shoes to fill. Fitting with the scrappy attitude of most Seiko divers, the Seiko 5 range offers brilliant value for money mated with unique and quirky designs. With various different color schemes and the recently introduced complications, there is a Seiko 5 for each of us, and the line has become a mainstay in most collections.
Seiko 5 Sports History
The Seiko 5 range finds its origin in the Seiko Sportsmatic 5, which came about in 1963. This was Japan's first-ever automatic watch displaying both the day and the date, with the five on the dial signifying the promise that every Seiko 5 watch would have five key attributes.
Those were an automatic movement, a day-date display at the three o'clock position, some form of water resistance, a recessed crown at the four o'clock position, and a durable case and bracelet.
That said, some other online sources would make us believe the five represents something else.- The Diaflex mainspring
- The Diashock system
- Automatic movement
- Day-date display
- Water resistance
Since then, the model line has encompassed nearly every single style of watch, from a dressy everyday piece to robust divers, all at an affordable price and exceptional quality.

What's Unique About Seiko 5 Sports Watches?
The most gripping part of the Seiko 5 Sports range is the fact that there are more than 20 different models for you to choose from. Ranging from collaborations with anime shows to simple non-diver variants, there's a Seiko 5 for each and every one of us.
Another great characteristic about these is the fact that they are some of the most affordable mechanical watches on the market that still carry great value and attention to detail. Seiko has nailed the affordable entry piece', and with the expansive Seiko 5 range, they offer something unique if you wish or something more subtle for the office as well.
Seiko 5 Sports Movements
The current range of Seiko 5 Sports models all come equipped with the Seiko 4R36 caliber. This workhorse has been around since before 2011 and features as an upgrade from the popular 7S36 movement due to the addition of hacking and hand-winding functionality. Seiko claims that the accuracy of caliber 4R36 is between +45 / -35 seconds per day, with a power reserve rating of 40 hours. The movement displays the time, day, and date.
Seiko 5 Sports Watch Colors
There are several different kinds of Seiko 5 Sports models available. There are plenty of sober options, presented with a classic blue or black, or perhaps even cream dial. From there, there are plenty of vibrant divers due to the increased functionality of a bright dial underwater. There are also several pattern dials thanks to collaboration with famous Japanese movies and figures of pop culture.
Seiko 5 Sports Watch Materials
Every modern Seiko 5 Sports model is presented in steel. There are several variants that are presented in 'coated' steel, whether it be black-ion, a hard coating, black-PVD, or even gold-tinted steel. Some options might also be presented in a combination of two of these options.
Seiko 5 Sports Watch Types
The Seiko 5 is renowned for being a day-date watch, meaning it will display the time, day, and date. Furthermore, all Seiko 5's retain a 100m water resistance, even when some models (divers) are presented with a rotating dive bezel and others are presented without a rotating bezel (everyday options). There are also a couple of field options presented with a field type B dial.
Seiko 5 Sports Watch Complications
The original philosophy of the Seiko 5 was to be a time-only watch displaying both the day and the date as well. Thus, the only complications we see present on Seiko 5 models are a rotating dive bezel, which allows wearers to track the time passed since a certain point in time, and a date or day-date aperture at the 3 o'clock position.
Seiko 5 Sports Sizes
With so many different models to consider, there are bound to be various sizes as well. The most common size for the diver variants is 42mm, a reasonable size when considering a snug lug-to-lug and the fact that the bezel will make the dial appear smaller.
Due to the Hardlex crystal, the watch might appear thick and will, therefore, not slide under every dress cuff. The everyday options are 39.4mm but might seem larger due to a thin fixed bezel. With the crown often sitting at 4 o'clock, the watch might also wear a lot easier than other counterparts.

Seiko 5 Sports Collection FAQ
Is Seiko 5 Sports worth it?
The Seiko 5 Sports collection was designed to fill a certain niche - an affordable, mechanical, and well-executed watch that offers great value for money and often breaks the rules of 'normality'. If that is what you are after, it is worth it.
What is the difference between Seiko 5 and Seiko 5 Sport?
As the name suggests, the Sport line is the sportier option, offering more striking design details, greater water resistance, and an overall sportier look. The former is presented as a sober variant with subtle undertones and restrained designs.
Why is Seiko 5 sports watch so cheap?
The reason why Seiko 5 Sports watches are so cost-effective is due to mass production. Unlike the hours upon hours that go into making a single Grand Seiko, a Seiko 5 might be produced in a few minutes.
Are Seiko 5 sports automatic watches good?
Absolutely! If what you are after is a good, all-round watch with reasonable specifications at a great price - it is fantastic.
