Omega Constellation Review
The History of the Omega Constellation
The Omega Constellation collection consists of some of the most classic and elegant timepieces. The complete collection of Omega Constellation for ladies and gents includes timeless designs with distinguished finishing. Omega constellation has existed for more than 60 years and it is one of the oldest of all Omega Collections. The Omega Chronometer watches started around 1952 and since then, there have been numerous changes in the passing years. Around the year 1970, the very first Constellation model, the Constellation Manhattan was released. The Chronometer feature was a rare scene back then, but today every single Constellation model consists of the Master Chronometer movements which were originally meant to be a feature of every single Constellation timepiece. The Chronometer feature was originally released by Omega in 1948 and the Omega Constellation Centenary was the first limited-edition timepiece that was released with this automatic movement feature. The Chronometer had the chronograph features with the start, stop, and return to zero feature. This helped users to stop, start, or reset the timepiece without interfering with any of the watch’s settings.
In 1952, Omega launched the Constellation Collection which was originally intended for men. The first timepieces in this collection had a ‘Constellation” logo and a star beneath it, representing its authenticity. It also had the official certifications including a sealed case back with a medallion. This medallion represented the Observatory of Geneva which was shown by the 8 different constellation stars on its dial. The very first models which were launched were powered by the Co-Axial Calibres 352, 354, and 500, 505. The complete collection reached up to Calibre 561 and Calibre 564. The Omega Constellation had a vast variety of timepieces launched at different times. Here are some major timepieces and their history.
The Vintage Omega Constellation Pie Pan
One of the best-selling Constellation Collection watches was Pie Pan Dial which was a 12-sided shaped dial. These domed dial watches were very popular in the ’50s and ’60s. The center part was raised, and the hour makers had the sloping peripheral chapter ring on this timepiece. The dial had the looks of an upside-down pie-pan, which made it one of the best vintage watches that are extremely valuable right now. It was available both in steel and gold with leather or steel straps. This was the start of the famous vintage omega constellation pie pan.
In the 60s, however, the flat dials, bracelets, and cases were introduced which were revolutionary ideas. The first bracelet/case included watch was created in 1969 and it was an instant hit. The very first Constellation collection that included timepieces for both men and women were the very first watches to introduce bracelets and cases. Pierre Moinat in 1964 was the first person to invent these innovative styles. These models had ultra-thin Calibres and diamond embedded dials. The featured models that were the most famous ones came on gorgeous gold brocade bracelets.
Omega Constellation Quartz Watch Collection
After its huge success early on, Omega introduced the Omega Constellation Quartz Collection which included three different categories of products. This was in 1970 and one of the most famous models at that time was the Constellation Electro quartz f8192 Hz with a square gold dial and a gold case. It was a thin time timepiece with a date display at the bottom for the men’s collection. The women’s collection was also introduced in the Omega Constellation Quartz category and it featured exotic models like the Omega Time Computer TC2. It was one of its kind digital LED timepieces for women which had a gold-plated rectangular shape and it was one of the very first digital luxury watches for women.
The Omega Constellation Manhattan Watch
Around this time in 1982, the design of the Constellation Manhattan was introduced and the early models under the Omega Constellation Manhattan category were quartz which was run by Calibre 1422. These were ultra-thin and four screwed watches which were known to have Griffes or extended claws that covered the dial and the entire case. The Griffes design was introduced as the major feature of the Jewellery collection by Omega Constellation. There were pieces of designed jewelry that were presented with claw-like designs, Omega authentic engravings, and roman letter engravings. These timepieces were covered under the Omega Constellation lady’s category and they were a huge success. It was originally designed by Carol Didisheim in 1985 which included a timepiece with a case that was shaped like a barrel. The Omega Constellation Manhattan Collection was not only made for women, as there were several timepieces both in gold and silver under the men category as well. The 1982 Omega Constellation Manhattan was launched by Quartz and had the roman numerals on its face, with the date display.
However, in 1995; the original Omega Constellation Manhattan Automatic was released which had bezels, instead of roman numerals. It also had a leather strap and metal bracelet options. In 1999, the Omega Constellation Quadra was released which had a square case and was available with diamond embedded designs as well. The Quadra category was exclusively designed for women and it had a huge popularity among celebrities and sports stars.
The Constellation Manhattan had a complete makeover in 2009. It was known as 2009 Omega Constellation Manhattan and it had new dials, new Griffes designs, better bracelets quality for comfort, and a butterfly-shaped clasp. The 2009 edition was made of quartz and had the master chronometer movements. It entered the women category and was available in 25mm, 28mm, and 29mm case sizes. In 2018, the Constellation Manhattan collection extended even further and included the all-new diamond embedded collection. Changes like the date window were included around the 6’0 clock position and the lugs were much thinner. The bevels were also much fine polished in the latest 2018 edition and the skeletonized hands with different dial choices were also seen in different timepieces of the Constellation Manhattan family.
In the men’s category of the Omega Constellation Manhattan, there were two different choices. The vintage 41mm Omega Constellation Globemaster and the Co-Axial Master Chronometer which is the quartz model available in 38mm and 35mm.
Omega Constellation Double Eagle Watch
Around 2003, the Omega Constellation Double Eagle was launched at the Omega European Masters Golf Tournament which was sponsored by Omega itself. This timepiece had the very first upgraded Co-Axial Calibre 2500 system. The Double Eagle was in a league of its own with a co-axial chronograph function. It had a 41mm case size with metal stainless steel and titanium which was used in its creation.
In 2015, the Omega Constellation Globemaster was introduced with the master chronometer movement (Certified by METAS). This was a combination of the Omega Constellation vintage design and the newly added classic Omega Globemaster features. This created the all-new Omega Constellation Globemaster which had a combination of all the styles that were present in the earlier Omega Constellation series. With all the features, the watch was the best waterproof timepiece and the makers ensured that it will not be affected by any wear and tear or other harsh physical conditions. The Vintage constellation pie pan dials were re-introduced in these editions which had 29mm case sizes.
