About Mühle Glashütte Nautical Watches
With the brand’s early horological history based in manufacturing marine chronometers for nautical navigation, it makes sense that a large portion of Mühle Glashütte’s catalog would focus on aquatic oriented timepieces. Ranging from dedicated dive watches to dressy designs drawing inspiration from marine chronometers, Mühle Glashütte’s collection of Nautical Watches covers timekeeping needs from the ocean floor to cocktail hour at the docks.
Mühle Glashütte Nautical History
The Mühle name within Germany has been in business since 1869, with Robert Mühle starting his own business manufacturing precision measuring devices. These tools were used by watch companies within Glashütte, and his work was so highly regarded that Robert Mühle was awarded The Gold Medal of the City of Dresden in 1896. The business continued to flourish, and expanded their offerings into the automotive space, manufacturing speedometers and dash clocks for automobiles. Unfortunately in 1945, the family business was dismantled in the aftermath of World War II.
Hans Mühle, Robert’s grandson, was able to re-establish the family business after returning to Glashütte in 1945. Classified as a refugee, it was difficult for him to rightfully claim parts of the family business, but he was able to begin manufacturing precision instruments again. It was not until 1972 that the brand was nationalized again, and absorbed into the government held businesses. During this period, the Mühle family began their direct involvement in manufacturing wrist watches as part of the "VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe" (frequently known as GUB) in 1980. In 1990, with the reunification of Germany, Hans took the role of managing director of GUB, and continued to expand into various timekeeping devices, including nautical clocks used for navigation. In 1996, Mühle Glashütte produced their first wrist watch, forming the beginnings of the brand we know today.
Now in its sixth generation of family owned operation, Mühle Glashütte continues to be an independent watch brand, manufacturing watches, including developing their own in-house movement.
Today the brand manufactures a diverse collection of timepieces, including a range of nautical themed watches. An icon for the brand, the S.A.R. models were developed for the German Search and Rescue team. The Teutonia collection draws inspiration from the brand’s history of manufacturing nautical clocks, and their 29er takes inspiration from dinghy boats, making a casual sporty timepiece with water resistance and durability to withstand an active lifestyle.

For those looking for dedicated dive watches, the SeeBatalion and Sea-Timer are the brand’s two dive watch lines. The Teutonia collection features both casual sport and dress oriented models. For the most robust tool watches, watch buyers should consider the S.A.R. models, as they are built to withstand the rigors of aquatic search and rescue.
Mühle Glashütte Nautical Movements
Mühle Glashütte uses mechanical movements in all of their watches. The brand sources movements from Swiss movement manufacturers ETA or Sellita, and customizes them in-house to include their woodpecker neck regulation system, and customized rotor.
