Doxa’s modern history is most closely associated with their iconic dive watches, the Sub 300 and Sub 300T. The unique cushion case design, bright orange dial, and ascension timing bezel made the Sub 300 a cult favorite for professional divers and watch enthusiasts alike.

Today, the Doxa Sub 300 offers collectors the opportunity to add an updated, more premium version of the original 300 to their collection, combining some elements that add some of the vintage charm to an otherwise modern, durable, and reliable sports watch.

About Doxa Sub 300 Watches

Doxa was founded in 1889 but did not release the Sub 300 to the public until 1967. The Doxa Sub 300 is the most iconic model for the brand, and the updated Sub 300T in 1968 was the first publicly available dive watch with a helium release valve. While the 300T lives on, it stays with the spirit of being a fully modern tool with updates to match. The Doxa Sub 300 is a more premium interpretation of the original Doxa iconic dive watch.

With a COSC-certified movement, domed sapphire crystal, and thinner stainless steel case, the Sub 300 is more of a watch enthusiast oriented dive watch, as opposed to a dedicated tool compared to other models within the Doxa catalog. Make no mistake, the Doxa Sub 300 is still a fully capable dive watch that can handle everything but the most extreme aquatic adventures.

Doxa Sub 300 History

Founded in 1889, Doxa started working on their first dive watch in the late 1960’s. In 1967, the Doxa Sub 300 was released, which featured the now famous orange dial and iconic Doxa dive timing bezel. The bezel features an air timing table for no compression dives, allowing divers to more accurately time their ascension to the surface.

The reason for the now distinctive shade of bright orange is that it was deemed to be the most legible under deeper depths where there is significantly less light. The Sub 300 was only produced for one year, and was replaced by the 300T in 1968. The Quartz Crisis put Doxa in the same position of many other brands, forcing the brand and the SUB 300 to fade away for several years. Regardless, the SUB 300 gained an ardent fan base, and the brand was resurrected in 1997 and started releasing watches again in 2002.

Doxa produced a Sub 300 limited edition in 2017 for the 50th anniversary of the model, which was more of a one-to-one recreation of the original watch, including period-correct dial markings, bezel markings in feet, and faux-vintage lume to help complete the vintage look. The new models released in 2020 make the watch appear more modern, with an updated dial font, superluminova lume, and the addition of vibrant color options.

How Much Do Doxa Sub 300 Watches Cost?

The Doxa Sub 300 range has a large number of options. While the watch as a whole remains unchanged, the case materials will be the largest determining factor regarding price. The stainless steel models start at $2550 on a rubber strap, the Sub 300ß models with a ceramic bezel start at $2150, the Sub 300 Carbon models cost $3990, and the Sub 300 Beta Sharkhunter models cost $7250.

Once you determine which material you prefer, the choice of dial color has no bearing on the price. Models available with a bracelet only see a $40 increase. Aside from case and bezel material, colors and bracelet/strap options have little bearing on the price, making it easy to purchase solely on personal preferences as opposed to letting budget dictate your choice.

What’s Unique About Doxa Sub 300 Watches?

The Doxa Sub 300 keeps the original cushion case design and dimensions of the original, measuring 42.5mm wide and 44.5mm lug-to-lug. The stainless steel models aim to capture the charm of the original with their domed sapphire crystals. The carbon-cased models keep the domed sapphire crystal, but the carbon case adds a sense of modernity. The Beta (ß) models are a more modern interpretation of the Sub 300, with ceramic bezels, textured black dials with colored accents, and flat sapphire crystals.

Doxa Sub 300 Movements

The standard Sub 300, Sub 300 Carbon, and Sub 300 Beta Sharkhunter models all use a COSC certified version of the ETA 2824-2. The Sub 300 Beta models utilize the Sellita SW200-2. Both movements are Swiss-made automatic winding movements that have proven to be robust and reliable. Both movements have a 38-hour power reserve and beat at 28,800 bph.

Doxa Sub 300 Watch Colors

The Doxa Sub 300 collection utilizes the Professional (orange), Searambler (silver), Sharkhunter (black), Caribbean (navy blue), Divingstar (yellow), Whitepearl (white) and Aquamarine (turquoise blue) dial variations.

On the Beta models, these colors are utilized as an accent color against a black dial, with the Searambler version being a textured white dial with orange accents. The vibrantly colored models also come with a color-matched strap. The Sub 300 Carbon Whitepearl features a fully lumed dial.

Doxa Sub 300 Watch Materials

The Doxa Sub 300 expands Doxa’s use of materials. The conventional option of stainless steel is available with the core Sub 300 collection. The Beta collection expands with the use of a ceramic bezel, and the Beta Sharkhunter includes a ceramic case, titanium core, and 18k gold bezel. The Doxa Sub 300 Carbon utilizes a carbon outer case.

The stainless steel cased models have the option of being on a steel bracelet or a rubber strap. The carbon and ceramic models are only available on a rubber strap. The crystal covering the dial on all models is made of sapphire, offering the scratch resistant durability expected from a modern dive watch. The Beta models feature a flat sapphire crystal, whereas the steel and carbon models feature a domed sapphire crystal.
