Squale is proud to present the 1521 Marina Militare model. To celebrate its 65 years in business, Square has partnered again with the Italian Navy (Marina Militare) to commemorate a long and fruitful relationship that began forty years ago when Squale supplied watches to the Navy for the first time.
This year is particularly important for the Italian Navy because it is celebrating its underwater activities in 2024. Creating a dive watch for the occasion was a significant choice.
The 1521 Marina Militare is a limited edition of 500 pieces, designed to be a celebratory, historic and high-performance watch. The choice of the 1521 collection is symbolic, since the first model Squale supplied to the Navy was a 1521. This legacy is carried forward with the creation of this functional and evocative timepiece.
Only a handful of the original 1521 watches supplied to the Navy in the 1980s have survived to the present day. This is because the watches were supplied to the divers as military-grade tools, and so, after their use, were returned and destroyed, as per protocol. Luckily, the G.O.S Museum in La Spezia has kept one.
Since the current 1521 Marina Militare was conceived as a celebratory watch it’s been designed to be the most elegant of the 1521 models. The 316L steel case has a brushed finish with polished bevels, while the black dial features a brossé finish which, together with the applied polished steel indexes, creates unique plays of light.
The dominant element is the color orange, an important symbol for both the Navy and Squale. The official Navy logo is orange, as are the iconic minute hands of Squale diving watches, including the 1521 models. This remarkable timepiece features the Navy logo in orange at 6 o’clock along with the minute track on the dial around the flange.
For this limited edition, the iconic minute hand comes in orange SuperLuminova with a white edge to perfectly match the shade of SuperLuminova features on the first quarter of the bezel.
The design of this dive watch pays homage to Squale's long history and partnership with the Italian Navy. The logo of the Italian Navy and the edition number are shown on the caseback. These details add historic and symbolic value, making it a unique and remarkable timepiece.
To enhance the functionality of this watch, the 1521 Marina Militare comes with a water-resistant, black, microfiber strap with orange stitching and an additional Squale-branded, natural rubber, black strap.
