How Much is Your Seiko Worth?
The Seiko model is a major determining factor of the final pre-owned price. For instance, the Seiko Lukia collection can range anywhere from $1,000 to around $2,000. The Seiko Presage model has a wider range, typically from around $600 to $2,000.
One of the most popular Seiko collections is the Sports 5 model. The Seiko Sports 5 is one of the more economical collections. The pre-owned price ranges from $300 to $2,000. The Astron model also ranks high in popularity and its used price is usually below $3,000.
Here are a couple of factors that impact the sell value of your Seiko watch:
- Rarity - Seiko has one of the most prominent cult followings in the watch industry. Their consistent ingenious designs are part of the reason why they are such a renowned brand. Seiko pieces with especially unique and rare designs will earn you the greatest payout. These pieces are usually found in iconic collections such as the Astron, Alpinist, and many more. Rare vintage pieces are also worth a lot.
- Condition - How well your watch has been maintained is a crucial factor in determining its resale value. Seiko watches that are still fully functional and retain the integrity of their design will attract the most buyers. The newer it looks, the higher the value!
- Movement - The internal workings of the watch is another aspect to keep in mind. If your Seiko watch still contains the brand's proprietary in-house movements, its value will be higher than watches equipped by third-party movements.
- Maintenance - One of the most common questions potential buyers will ask is what was the most recent maintenance done on the watch. It is important that the maintenance service was done recently and that it was conducted at an official Seiko service center. This will ensure the highest possibility of successfully selling your Seiko watch.
How To Get The Best Price For Your Seiko Watches
Keeping up with maintenance is your best bet to receive the maximum value for your Seiko watch.
Take good care of it
Your Seiko watch does not need to be stored away from the world for it to retain its original conditions. All you need to do is follow a few regular care tips and your watch will always be as good as new. For one, never expose your watch to intense temperatures or pressures above its water resistance. You also want to pay close attention to your watch's movement and make sure its lubricants never dry out.
Service it frequently
Seiko watches should be serviced approximately once every three years. Only service your Seiko watch at an authorized Seiko service center. If you are going to replace broken parts, make sure to only do so with original parts and never discard any old parts. As a side note, keep polishing and other alterations to a minimum.
Keep Your Box & Papers
Always keep your watch's original box and documentation. Even if some documentation has expired like the warranty card, make sure to keep everything. Don't forget about tags, straps, or bracelet links you may have taken off. All of this will ensure you receive the maximum value for your Seiko watch.
Should I Service my Seiko Watch before Selling it?
Even though it is important to consistently service your Seiko watch, it is not recommended to do so just before selling it.
The only situation where this is advisable is if the watch is not functioning. Your potential buyer might want to keep the watch as is or change it completely, so you should let them service it instead.
On top of that, a serviced watch is not worth much more than a watch that has not been recently serviced.
At Exquisite Timepieces, we will conduct a thorough evaluation of your Seiko watch before proposing a final deal. If your Seiko watch is in extremely poor conditions, it's best to leave the service process to us.
About Seiko Watches
The story of Seiko starts in a little shop in the 1880s in Japan. Kintaro Hattori, the founder of Seiko, worked in a shop repairing watches and clocks for over a decade.
In 1892, Hattori bought a factory in Tokyo and founded Seikosha, a clock manufacturing company. Hattori's company was a success from the start. Only a few years after, he was able to expand his business and begin producing pocket watches.
In the early 1900s, only a couple of wristwatches were imported to Japan, and none had been created on site. Kintaro Hattori was dedicated to rapid innovation from the very beginning. He created the first ever Japanese wristwatch, the Laurel, in 1913.
The Laurel propelled Hattori's business forward and gave way to the first Seiko watch created in 1924. Kintaro Seiko worked on perfecting their watchmaking for years until the Grand Seiko was launched in 1960.
Seiko's ambition did not stop there. In 1965, Seiko released the first ever Japanese Diver's watch. They improved their Diver's watch in 1975 and again in 1990.
Seiko has served as the official timer for countless sports competitions. Till this day, they continue to inspire with their innovative designs and cutting-edge technology.
