The Grand Seiko Spring Drive men’s watch with reference SBGA283 is one of the watches in the heritage collection released by the Japanese watchmakers in the early 2000s. It is a newer version of the old SBGA083, and it runs on the unique spring drive mechanism which is a technology peculiar to Grand Seiko that no other company in the world has. It is one of the first of their Seiko watches to receive the 9R65-movement system, and it is characterized by the technical excellence and the sophistication synonymous with the heritage collection members.
EXTERIOR
The Grand Seiko SBGA283’s casing is made from stainless steel, and it’s about 39mm in diameter and 12.30mm in thickness. It comes with a stainless-steel chain bracelet which has a polished and brushed finish, and a three-fold clasp designed with push-button for easy release – you can change the band to leather if that’s your preference. The glass covering is made from dual-curved sapphire glass that is anti-reflective due to its inner surface coating. The Grand Seiko SBGA283 weighs about 148g which is perfect for a watch of its caliber.
MOVEMENT
The Grand Seiko SBGA283 is one of the first watches to use the in-house 9R65 caliber, spring movement automatic system. The 9R65 caliber system which has 30 jewels is a combination of a mechanical movement with an electronic timepiece’s accuracy(±1 second per day / ±15 seconds per month on average). Its unwinding springs drive a series of gears that generate a small number of electrical charges which activate both the quartz oscillator and its electronic circuit. This unique movement system is ten times more accurate than most other traditional mechanical movement system and it is unique to the Grand Seiko. Furthermore, another exciting thing about this watch is its 72 hours of power reserve capacity. The level of power usage can be monitored by a power indicator on the dial of the watch. Finally, the 9R65 movement system which is a sight to behold is visible through the transparent screw-down the back of the watch.
FUNCTIONS
The beauty of the Grand Seiko SBGA283 is not just its defining quality, but it also has some wonderful functionality which is quite interesting. The watch has a water resistance capacity of 10 bars which makes it wearable in water as deep as 100m. This makes it a watch for all seasons as it isn’t affected by the rain, neither should you worry when you are wearing it while doing chores that bring you in contact with water. Another safety precaution added to the Grand Seiko SBGJ201 is its magnetic resistance capacity – so, even if you go close to a magnet, you are safe.
DISPLAY
The display on the Grand Seiko SBGA283 is as exquisite as that on other members of the heritage collection. This Grand Seiko heritage watch spots a champagne, silver-toned colored dial with a date window located at its 3:00 position. A beautifully designed power level indicator with its own hand also sits on the dial alongside three silver hands indicating hour, minutes and seconds. Although there are no Arabic numerals to indicate each hour, slim but visible silver indicator indexes are used instead. The Grand Seiko logo is also inscribed on the dial as is the signature practice of the Japanese company, making it in conclusion, a charming watch to have.
