Grand Seiko SBGX261 Review
With about 60 years’ experience in watchmaking, Grand Seiko has established itself as a force to reckon with in the luxury watchmaking industry. All watches made are classics, and the Grand Seiko SBGX261 is no different as it stands tall among the Japanese watchmaker heritage collection. Made from materials of quality, and designed to ensure that precision and accuracy is top-notch, the SBGX261 is a timepiece that every watch collector or enthusiast will like to add to their collection.
Designed with the male gender in mind, Seiko’s SBGX261 has proven that it isn’t a watch just for men, as women who understand class, and are bold when it comes to fashion have also started opting for it as their choice.
Furthermore, the SBGX261 is designed to have a portable body frame, and weigh as light as possible to ease its carrier. Grand Seiko employs the 9F movement system which is one of its most accurate movement systems to ensure that the SBGX261 stands out in its duty as a timekeeping device.
Exterior
The design, weight, and material used in making a wristwatch determines its beauty, ease of use, and durability. Following the steps of majority of its predecessor in the heritage collection, Grand Seiko decided to use stainless steel in making the casing of the SBGX261. With a size of the 37mm diameter by 10mm thickness, the casing is designed by master craftsmen and spots a brushed finishing.
Attached to both sides of the casing are interlocked stainless steel bracelets. The bracelet’s perimeter is 205mm and it comes with three-fold clasp with the push-button release for easy strapping and unstrapping from the wrist.
Protecting the dial in the casing is glass made from sapphire crystals. This glass is anti-scratch, and it is chemically treated in its inner surface to make it anti-reflective. So, you don’t need to worry about sun rays.
The back case of the Grand Seiko SBGX261 is also made from stainless steel and has the signature lion emblem of Grand Seiko. Furthermore, the case back is screwed to reduce the chances of water penetration into the watch. Finally, as a whole, the Grand Seiko SBGX261 weighs 134.0g. This is a perfect weight for a wristwatch because you’ll barely feel it on your wrist and this means little or no strain when you wear it.
Movement
Just as computer and phones need OS (operating system) to function optimally, so also does wrist watches need movement system to differentiate them from bracelets. The Grand Seiko SBGX261 comes with the quartz, caliber 9F62 movement system. This is the smallest caliber among all of the calibers in the 9F series. Although small in size, this caliber is arguably the more superior than the average quartz movement, if the construction details is to be considered.
The caliber 9F62 has a specially designed high-speed motor that is dedicated to date changing, and this helps the SBGX261 change its date within 1/2000th of a second. Using dedicated crystals and crafted gears and levers, torque is reduced so that the energy required in powering the 9F62 system is considerably reduced. This ensures that the battery used last a very long time before a change is required.
Most importantly, a key requirement of any timekeeping device is accuracy. The SBGX261’s caliber 9F62 is designed to have a staggering ±10 seconds accuracy per year. That is simply a very accurate device.
Functions
To enjoy the timekeeping ability of a watch, some extra functions are required, and this is what differentiate just any watch from Grand Seiko’s watches. The SBGX261 comes with these functions so that you can enjoy your experience as you use it.
Firstly, SBGX261 is designed to be water-resistant. With a rating of 10 bar, the SBGX261 stays water-resistant even when used in a depth of 100 meters. This means that you can wear your watch while you swim, and the water spill can just be cleaned off the watch with no damage at all. However, care should be taken when using your watch in water. Endeavor not to set the time underwater, Finally, another function that stands out in the Grand Seiko SBGX261 is its magnetic resistance properties. Even though its moving parts are made from metals, the watch’s accuracy is not affected when it is used near or within a magnetic field.
Display
Grand Seiko SBGX261 comes with a pitch-black dial that brings the memories of night time. There are hours and minutes silver-coated indexes to replace the conventional Arabic 12-hour numerals. The hour, minute and seconds hands are all made to precision so that accuracy when reading the watch isn’t reduced or doubted.
There is a date window at the 3 o’clock position of the watch, while Grand Seiko’s GS signature is just below the 12 o’clock position. In conclusion, the combination of the dial, the indexes, and the hands give a beautiful display that ensures a beautiful watch reading/using experience.
